I accompanied my son, Dan, on his first campout with Boy Scout Troop 474.  I was up before the boys were (around 6:30 a.m., just before dawn), and as I was walking through the campsite, I had the urge to look up and to the right.  I expected a few pinpoints of stars as the sky started to lighten, but instead the Moon and the planet Venus greeted me, framed by the silhouette of the trees.

Why is this cactus here, all alone on a mountainside? I was looking through pictures today of my past trip to Arizona and began asking myself this question. I got up early that day to watch the sun rise. I began thinking that sometimes I feel like this cactus, walking some of life's journey alone on earth. It's a part of life. People can provide support but none of them can go through exactly what you or I am going through. Then I had this thought - that God may have put this cactus there all alone for the sole purpose to add beauty and stand tall to bear witness to God. And, it is beautiful, caught in the early sunrise. But also in that thought, I realized that we are journeying here on earth, whether traveling with others or standing on a mountain all alone, to add beauty in our own way and to bear witness to God .  Jeanette Belz

Yesterday a man told me how much he appreciated the Thanksgiving meal served annually by Circa 1922 b/c they, "let you serve yourself." Then we talked about what food HE likes. I am learning that just b/c someone is homeless, doesn't mean they don't have preferences. Their dignity as human beings gives them a right to choices. Think I finally found the best coffee in Wilmington, NC.

My pastor recently asked me to supply weekly communion for our church. Being married to an inspiring bread baker, I was happy to do so (my husband got vol-un-told). Every Saturday evening, my husband dutifully bakes our communion bread. On Sunday mornings, we share as a community, in the body and blood of Christ. Each week, as our pastor tears the loaf of bread in half, and recites the sacred words… I feel a tinge of joy that the bread we are about to receive together came from my oven.

As Advent was approaching, my pastor asked if we would bake sweet bread for the season. The Saturday before Advent began, my car broke down and stranded me at work, so I did not stop at the store to buy the eggs we needed to make the egg bread for church. When my husband went to bake, I told him to make the same old regular loaf. However, my husband found one egg in our frig and set to his task. He called me into  the kitchen asked me to braid the dough he created. Working together we formed the bread into a braid. As it rose, it tripled in size. From our oven emerged a gorgeous, bronze, egg bread (which we had never attempted to make before). It was lovely. And, it was huge!

When I got to church on Sunday AM, I proudly presented our bread creation to the pastor hoping for his approval. The loaf was BIG. My pastor decided to capitalize on the amount of bread. During communion, he addressed each of us by name and handed each of us a mouthful of succulent, sweet bread, which we dipped in wine (aka grape juice). When I put that bread in my mouth… the taste, texture, and sacredness filled me body and soul. A woman, who had not come to church in a long time, squealed with delight after receiving communion… saying that she was filled, transported, and deeply touched—a genuine and real experience she claimed. She was lifted, comforted, and changed.

Communion is my favorite part of the Sunday service. The elements represent a time and place long ago that is accessible through the imagination. Scared spoken words transport us back to a great event that continues to affect and influence our world today. As believers in Jesus… we participate and partake in what is real for all time. The gestures of communion provide a structure and a safe place in a world of nonstop activity and chaos. Communion brings us back and takes us home. By partaking of the body of Christ, we are the body of Christ—His Church—not individuals, but a community bound together by God’s love and grace. Unified ina sacred and simple meal of bread and wine.

You asked “How do I see God in this photo”.  I will try and keep this short.

This photo was all about trying to capture what God provided. He put the fog there, He brought the new day and He put me there to see what He can do. Any skill or talent I may have He gave me. To show me that through all my ups and downs He has never left me. My task that morning was to capture all that He has provided me.

I started this hobby of photography shortly after my wife passed away. At first it was just to get me out of the house. But somewhere along the line it has became much more than that.  The rest of that story is the long version and will save for later.

My children were little and it was a terrifying experience.  It was difficult to see God in the experience.  Thankfully, it didn't take long to see how God used the firemen, the rescue squad, and the people in our community to help us.  Even when there is a tragedy there are always people there to help. Although I think most of us intuit it, the Bible reminds us that animals and nature will increase our spiritual awareness and bring us closer to God:  "But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air they will tell you; Or speak to the earth and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will explain to you.  Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this, In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the  breath of all mankind?" By purest chance I was out in our street when the kindergarten
Bus mumbled past going slow and I looked up just as all seven
Kids on my side of the bus looked at me and I grinned and they
Lit up and all this crap about God being dead and where is God
And who owns God and who hears God better than whom is the
Most egregiously stupid crap imaginable because if you want to
See God and have God see you and have this mutual perception
Be completely untrammeled by blather and greed and comment,
Go stand in the street as the kindergarten bus murmurs past. I’m
Not kidding and this is not a metaphor. I am completely serious.
Everyone babbles about God but I saw God this morning just as
The bus slowed down for the stop on Maple Street. God was six
Girls and one boy with a bright green and purple stegosaurus hat.
Of course God would wear a brilliantly colored tall dinosaur hat!
If you were the Imagination that dreamed up everything that ever
Was in this blistering perfect terrible world, wouldn’t you wear a
Hat celebrating some of the wildest most amazing developments?

I spy God in the wondrous curiosity of children.

I spy God in the wondrous curiosity of children.

The morning I received the official news that I have metastatic breast cancer, I went for a walk at a park I have been to many times. In the midst of the heavy fog, I noticed this beautiful tree standing out, strong, and beautiful. As the backdrop of the park changed due to the fog, I was able to appreciate something of beauty I previously had simply walked passed. As the backdrop of my life has now changed, I look forward to seeing life with new eyes and with greater appreciation for the many things I simply didn't notice, or didn't appreciate before. All of life is a gift. I spy God in this beautiful tree.... and I know we will all spy God everywhere we choose to truly see.
